The Custom of Chinese New Year




The Lunar New Year is the most important event in a year in Chinese culture. Every family will begin to clean their house to waiting for the New Year coming. They considered clean up their house before Chinese New Year can take away bad luck. People want to have a new beginning in the coming year.

Some old people like to do some decoration on their walls and doors. They put some red pieces of paper that have some Chinese words written on them on the walls and doors. The old people believe those red piece of paper can bring luck and wealth for their family. Why the people frequently choose red because Chinese think that is the lucky color for New Year.

Then, there are at least three Chinese customs of New Year you may know. Firstly, fish and dumplings for New Year’s Eve dinner. The Chinese think have fish means will be a surplus for the New Year. The dumplings symbol for increasing wealth in the New Year. Second, the adults will put the money in red envelopes for children. In the New Year’s Eve the children are supposed to say, “Happy New Year!” to every adult they see, then they can get red envelop in money return from adults. In Chinese tradition the money meant to symbolize good fortune for the coming year. Finally, there is another traditional food usually appears on the table. It is called ”Nian Gao”. That is a special cake made by rice and sugar. It tastes sweet and sticky, but it means that sweetness and luck will always stick with you.
